Burnishing Paper

Using a color pencil, in this case I used the red, color over the spirals. In this photo, I used the side of the pencil tip and colored with a light pressure. What you’ll see that where the spiral was burnished into the paper, remains white, while the rest of the area takes on the red color.

The technique of burnishing layers a sequence of colors, mixing them together with white or other light colors, repeating the sequence until the surface is covered with pigment. This technique becomes especially interesting on black, or other dark-colored surfaces. For optimum results, use soft, wax-based pencils and, as always, add color gradually.
